One dead following house fire in Superior village

May 10—SUPERIOR — A residential structure fire in the village of Superior claimed one life and damaged two homes Friday morning, May 10. There were no injuries to firefighters, according to a news release from Superior Fire Chief Camron Vollbrecht.

The Superior Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 6528 John Ave. at 4:23 a.m. Friday. When fire crews arrived on the scene, they found a large amount of fire coming from the attached garage of the single-story home. Firefighters attacked the fire from the exterior garage door, knocking down a large amount of the fire before making entry through the front door of the home. They quickly located an individual in the home and removed the person from the building.

"Despite lifesaving efforts of the first responders, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene," Vollbrecht said.

The home sustained siginificant smoke and fire damage and an adjacent home suffered fire damage. Fire crews remained on scene until about 8 a.m.

The fire remains under investigation. Vollbrecht said the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation are assisting Superior Fire Department investigators.

Several off-duty firefighters were called in to cover the city while on-duty crews fought the fire.

Superior police, Mayo Ambulance, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Superior Water, Light and Power also responded to the scene.
