One dead after car crashes into tree in Emporia

TOPEKA (KSNT) – One person is dead, after a fatal crash in Emporia Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Emporia Police Department, at 12:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to an accident at 12th Avenue and Mechanic Street, near Emporia State University (ESU).

Officers say, when they arrived, they found a Toyota Camry that had crashed into a tree on ESU property. The car had been heading northbound on Mechanic Street and it failed to stop at the stop sign at 12th Avenue. The driver of the Toyota Camry was transported to Newman’s Hospital where they were pronounced deceased.

KSNT 27 News spoke with a spokesman for the Emporia Police Department Wednesday, who said the death was ‘impact-related,’ after the person hit the tree. Due to the nature of this accident, the Emporia Police said the driver’s identification will not be released to the public.
