A Dublin man is dead after a car crashed into a pond Thursday night near the Columbus-Hilliard border.

Just before 11:30 p.m., Columbus and Hilliard police and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office responded to a report that a car went off the road near the northeast side of the intersection of Renner and Alton Darby Creek roads and overturned into a retention pond for the Sugar Farms apartment complex.

According to a Hilliard police report, Jonathan Waller, 27, of Dublin, was driving west on Renner Road in a 2010 Lexus ES350 when he drove off the roadway. His car went into a ditch and struck a culvert, landing upside down in the pond.

Waller was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Hilliard police are handling the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash. The farmland where the Sugar Farms apartment complex and single-family homes have been developed was annexed in January 2019 from Brown and Norwich townships into Columbus. Because of the close boundaries of Columbus, Hilliard and the townships in that area, the three law enforcement agencies responded.
