Warning: This recap for the “Street Rats” episode of Once Upon a Time contains spoilers.

Magic comes with a price on Once Upon a Time, but the question is whether a person is willing to pay it.

This week’s episode delves more into the Saviour mythology, as we get a deeper look into Aladdin’s backstory. He is a Saviour, just like Emma, and he goes on his quest with gusto. The problem is, once he completes his venture, he isn’t really willing to deal with the aftereffects.

Emma has to face this same issue: Will she live the death scenario she’s seen in her dreams, or is she willing to use the shears of fate to avoid it? What’s a true Saviour to do? And what are her loved ones willing to do to save her?

Being a hero is never an easy task on Once Upon a Time.

Here’s a rundown of this week’s episode.

Villain of the Week: Jafar

This week gives us an in-depth look at Aladdin, Jasmine, and Jafar. So, last week, we met Jasmine, aka Shaleen, a teacher at Snow’s school. Through flashbacks, we learn she’s the Jasmine we all knew and loved from the movie. She’s a somewhat stuck-up princess who finds and hires the thief Aladdin to get the “diamond in the rough” — a magical object that will save her father’s kingdom.

Jasmine and Aladdin find the diamond in the “Cave of Wonders,” which is filled with numerous treasures. But the building almost collapses on them, and Aladdin saves them, which leads Jasmine to deem him a Saviour. Later, when Jasmine is gone, Jafar appears, and he taunts Aladdin with the news that Saviours have terrible endings. But Jafar offers him magical shears that can cut off his future story.

Will he use them to be with Jasmine? Let’s continue to this tale…

Hero of the Week: Emma

Emma is still seeing Archie to talk about the terrible vision of her death (which she still hasn’t told her family about). She meets Shaleen, aka Jasmine, and learns that Aladdin was a Saviour, too, and might have some advice for her.

Emma finally ‘fesses up to her vision, including the fact that Regina is not depicted with her family. Regina is disturbed by the idea that she might be Emma’s killer, and offers to help her find Aladdin and maybe subvert the vision.

They look in a crypt, and Jasmine finds Aladdin’s scarab, indicating he’s dead. Emma gives up, and Henry blames himself for finding her in the first place. If he hadn’t gone looking for her in Boston, she’d be living her bounty-hunter life without all this nonsense. She immediately tells him not to take the blame, because she gained a family and a son and true love, all because of him.

Just as she says this, Aladdin emerges. He’s been in Storybrooke the entire time. He didn’t want to reveal himself to Jasmine because he didn’t want to put her in danger. But he does have the future-stopping shears and gives them to Emma. She doesn’t want to use them, so she asks Hook to get rid of them.

He agrees, and seemingly throws them into the ocean. But in reality, he keeps them, because he loves her and it’s the only way to stop her death vision. It’s probably going to end really badly, but … Wow, so romantic at the same time. Captain Swan forever!
