OMG: Marvel just revealed their new Iron Man, and she’s a young black woman

Marvel just revealed their new Iron Man and we’re super excited about it. Why? Because the new Iron Man is actually not going to be a man — she’s going to be a young black woman.

According to TIME, the new Iron Man (okay, Iron Woman) is going to be called Riri Williams — she’s a 15-year-old genius who studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is filling the big shoes left at the end of the Marvel Comics’ Civil War II series. Just how does she get Tony Stark’s attention? She builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm.

We think it’s great that they’re working hard to diversify their character slate — comics reach so many people, and are an important medium for so many. We’ve been seeing comics come to life on the big and little screen for years now, and the stories they tell are important. It only makes sense that people with different backgrounds are represented in comics, and we’re so glad that Marvel is taking this step with Riri.

In the interview with Time, Civil War II writer Brian Michael Bendis said, “[W]hen you have a young woman come up to you at a signing and say how happy she is to be represented in his universe, you know you’re moving in the right direction.”

We love that, and we can’t wait to follow along and see what she can do.
