Olympics: IOC recommends double vote for 2024 and 2028 Games

The International Olympic Committee has officially recommended that its members award both the 2024 and 2028 Summer Games when the organization votes in the fall, IOC president Thomas Bach said in Switzerland on Friday.

Paris and Los Angeles are the only bid cities remaining for the 2024 competition and it remains unclear which city would be selected to host first. Previous reports suggested it would be Paris, which would be celebrating its 100th anniversary of hosting the 1924 Summer Games.

A double vote would mark the first time hosting rights to consecutive Olympiads have been awarded. Both cities have hosted the Summer Games twice each.

Bach called the double vote a “golden opportunity” for the IOC and it would seem as much given that the organization has struggled to attract interested cities given the cost and demands associated with being a host city. With Los Angeles and Paris almost assured to be on board, the IOC gets two host cities that have hosted before and pose little risk.

Los Angeles would be hosting for the third time, with each instance coming by default. No other city bid for the Games in 1932 or 1984. Somewhat ironically, the city turned a profit on both occasions, which is not always the case in the modern Olympic movement.

Once confirmed in September, the IOC will have five host cities lined up for the next six Olympics only the 2026 Winter Games naming process yet to be completed.

Here’s a look at the upcoming games:

2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics | Feb. 9 – 25
The Olympics return to South Korea for the first time since the 1988 Seoul Games and begin a run of three straight to be hosted in Asia.

2020 Tokyo Summer Games | July 24 – Aug. 9
This is the third time Tokyo has been awarded the Games and second turn hosting. Tokyo had been awarded the 1940 Summer Games which were moved to Helsinki before being cancelled due to World War II. Eventually, the 1964 Summer Games were held there.

2022 Beijing Winter Games | Feb. 4 – 20
Beijing will become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Games, and will do so only 14 years apart after staging the 2008 Summer Games.

2026 Winter Olympics, not yet awarded | Dates TBD
Cities reportedly interested in mounting a bid include Almaty, Kazhakstan; Calgary, Erzurum, Turkey; Innsbruck, Austria; Patagonia, Argentina; Sapporo, Japan, and Sion, Switzerland. A decision will not come until 2019.
