Old-school pub in Sacramento? New brewery serves pints for $6.50 — and has a food menu

Sacramento residents can sip on craft beer without breaking the bank at the newest taproom in town.

Mattie Groves Brewery, which opened at 1716 L St. in midtown on Tuesday, was previously home to Big Stump Brewing Co. The nearly 3,000-square-foot space currently features 12 beers on tap at $6.50 per glass. Sizes range from 12 to 16 ounces (a pint), depending on the brew’s strength.

Co-owners Katie and Matt Cooper, who started conceptualizing their brewery in 2015, aren’t new to the beer scene.

The duo tackled home brewing in the early stages of their nearly 18-year relationship, earned a gold medal from prestigious beer competition World Beer Cup and worked various jobs in the beer business, according to the brewery’s website.

Now the couple wants people to enjoy the pub experience at an affordable price.

“I just feel so much love from Sacramento and all the business around here, the people that showed up,” said Katie, a Sacramento native, during a phone interview.

“I don’t even think I have words for it.”

Family-owned Mattie Groves — named after a British folk song — is both a kid and dog-friendly establishment with water bowls and dog treats available. Just beware: Adults aren’t discouraged from “speaking their minds or from using colorful language,” the brewery states.

The one-story building features architectural elements including exposed brick walls and rafters, high ceilings, newly finished terracotta floors and long “banquet style” wooden tables crafted by Katie’s family. The brewing area features a brewing system, fermenters and a brite tank, according to its website.

“It’s a very cool building ... this whole thing is just an extension of who we are,” said Katie, who described the business as an old-school pub.

“Old school but not,” she said.

The space doesn’t feature a physical kitchen. Instead, customers can order pizza and sandwiches from a curated menu produced by adjoining coffee bar Old Soul Co.

Food prices range from a $10.50 grilled cheese sandwich assembled on focaccia with various kinds of cheese to a $15 meat lovers pizza with pepperoni, chorizo, bacon and dill. Vegetarian options include the $13.25 Garden Veggie sandwich with honey wheat bread and clover sprouts and a $15 Vegtastic pizza with caramelized onions and roasted potatoes.

Soda, chips, crackers and sardines are also available for purchase. Outside food is welcome.

Katie said the brewery will host trivia and game nights soon. In the meantime, customers can borrow a board game or a television that’s connected to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

A Grand opening party is scheduled for sometime in February, Katie said.

Mattie Groves Brewery is open seven days a week. Business hours are from noon to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday; noon to 11 p.m. on Friday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
