Old chimneys demolished at TECO’s Big Bend Power Station

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — An Apollo Beach landmark was demolished Thursday as part of Tampa Electric’s effort to do away with unneeded infrastructure at the Big Bend Power Station.

Big Bend’s chimneys were a landmark for travelers on US-41 since their construction in the 1970s.

“Big Bend’s chimneys have been landmarks in Apollo Beach for decades,” Allan Williams, Director of Big Bend Station, wrote in a statement. “The new view is dramatically different.”

It took crews a little over a year to demolish the 500-foot structures, a TECO news release said. The company plans to recycle and sell equipment and materials to cut down on costs.
