Olathe opens new $28 million police headquarters; ribbon cutting

OLATHE, Kan. — A new $29 million police station recently opened in Olathe, and will have its ribbon cutting Friday afternoon.

They began construction on this new police headquarters off Old 56 Highway and Harrison Street back in August of 2022.

It replaces the original police station built back in 1983. The old building was cramped and dark, making it hard for officers to do their jobs.

This new building is spacious and bright, with plenty of space to expand as the department grows.

They currently have more than 200 officers on staff, and the architects worked with police on the design.

“We had a hand in just every design aspect of this, whether it was picking out colors for things, the operational design of rooms, or where things were grouped,” Police Chief, Mike Butaud, said.

“It’s a really well-planned building. We put a lot of time into it.”

The ribbon cutting is at three o’clock today, and the public is invited to attend.

They are also planning to build a new shooting range and training facility soon to help them recruit new officers.
