A recent report from Forbes Advisor found that Oklahoma ranks in the top five states with the worst drivers in 2024 based on fatal car accidents.

The number of deadly crashes in the U.S. increased by 12.7% between 2019 and 2023, according to estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The state has the sixth highest total number of fatal car accidents at 24.32 per 100,000 licensed drivers, according to Forbes Advisor. Oklahoma has the eighth highest number of fatal car accidents involving a distracted driver at 2.01 per 100,000 licensed drivers.

According to Forbes Advisor, these states have the worst drivers:

  1. New Mexico: The state has the highest number of fatal car accidents involving a distracted driver at 10.16 per 100,000 licensed drivers, according to the study, along with a variety of other dangerous driving behaviors.

  2. Wyoming: The state has the highest number of fatal car accidents involving a drowsy driver at 2.93 per 100,000 licensed drivers.

  3. Texas: Texas drivers are among the worst in the U.S. with the second highest number of drunk drivers involved in fatal car accidents at 8.32 per 100,000 licensed drivers.
