Oklahoma ranked worst state for women in recent study

Oklahoma was ranked the worst state for women in the U.S. in a study released earlier this week.

The study from WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 25 key indicators of living standards for women, ranging from median earnings for female workers to women’s health care to the female homicide rate.

Women’s economic, social well-being and health care in Oklahoma

Oklahoma ranked second to last in women's economic and social well-being, followed only by Louisiana.

The bottom five states in this rank include Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.

Oklahoma ranked dead last in women's health care and safety.

The state was followed by Arkansas, West Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee.

Oklahoma also ranked 50th in the rate of uninsured women, followed only by Texas.

A 2021 study from America's Health Rankings found that 20.5% of women ages 19-44 not covered by private or public health insurance.

The state was also ranked the worst for female homicide, tying with Alaska, Wyoming and Arkansas.

A study from the Violence Policy Center found that in 2020, 66 women were murdered by men in Oklahoma. The homicide rate among women murdered by men was 3.28 per 100,000 in Oklahoma.

Percent of women who voted in the 2020 presidential election in Oklahoma

Oklahoma ranked 46th in the nation for the percent of women who voted in the 2020 presidential election. The state was followed by Alabama, South Dakota, Arkansas and West Virginia.

Overall, the study found that blue states were more women-friendly than red states.
