Oklahoma fugitive in murder case arrested in Idaho Springs

DENVER (KDVR) — A woman wanted on charges of an accessory to murder in Oklahoma was taken into custody in Idaho Springs on Tuesday.

According to the Idaho Springs Police Department, 29-year-old Vanessa Norvell was a wanted fugitive out of Kay County, Oklahoma.

On Tuesday, an officer with the Idaho Springs Police Department saw a woman who matched Norvell’s description. She was taken into custody without incident in the 2300 block of Colorado Boulevard at 6:30 p.m.

According to police and a local news outlet in Oklahoma, Norvell was wanted in connection to a deadly fentanyl overdose of a 40-year-old man from Sept. 24, 2023, in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

Idaho Springs police investigated an overdose death on that same day.

“The Idaho Springs Police Department investigated the tragic fentanyl overdose death of 26-year-old Idaho Springs resident Garrett Chandler on Sept. 24, 2023, which was, coincidentally, within days of the Ponca City overdose. Our agency empathizes with both families that lost loved ones to fentanyl and our agency is committed to combating this dangerous drug. ISPD was grateful we could assist our law enforcement partners in Ponca City, Oklahoma and appreciates the collaborative and positive relationship with the Kay County District Attorney’s Office in safely apprehending this individual.”

Norvell is being held at the Clear Creek County Jail on a $100,000 bond. She is awaiting extradition to Kay County, Oklahoma.
