3 QUESTIONS
...about seasonal allergies
If the sneezing and itchy eyes didn’t tip you off, it’s allergy season. Resident health editor Rachel Grumman Bender talks about her team’s reporting on how allergists treat their own symptoms.
Anthony: What tips did the experts give for making the most of antihistamines?
Rachel: One expert told our reporter that switching up her allergy meds improved symptoms. She goes with a long-acting antihistamine daily and uses a short-acting one at night for “extra coverage” when symptoms get bad.
Anthony: Two of the experts spoke about taking allergy shots. What are the benefits compared to other treatments?
Rachel: They’re highly effective and can reduce the need for daily allergy meds. For some, they can even get rid of allergies altogether. One expert told us he was surprised by how well they worked.
Anthony: Beyond medicines, what lifestyle changes can help when allergies are acting up?
Rachel: A big one: Taking a shower at night. It can help wash off any pollen that gets stuck in your hair. Another: wearing an N95 mask. One expert said it helps when he mows the grass.
