New OKC Thunder arena: Oklahoma City council names proposed site, planned agreements

Oklahoma City has picked the site of its new arena and home of the Thunder basketball team.

An agenda for Tuesday's meeting of the city council shows the new arena will be a block north of its current location at what's now the Cox Convention Center, occupied by Prairie Surf Studios.

Prairie Surf struck a deal to open in the former Cox Convention Center in 2020 after the new convention center was built across from Scissortail Park. The possibility of the studio site being cleared to make way for an arena has been publicly discussed for more than a year. Alternative sites for Prairie Surf were not disclosed after the arena vote.

The council will vote on whether to approve a development agreement with PBC Sports & Entertainment, LLC.

The development will be bordered by Sheridan Avenue on the north and Reno Avenue to the south. The west side of the new arena will face Myriad Botanical Gardens. To the east is the Sante Fe Depot.

When the arena is complete, it will replace the function of the Paycom Center, where the Oklahoma City Thunder are battling in the NBA playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks.

In December, voters overwhelmingly approved a sales tax to raise at least $850 million to build the new downtown arena.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
