Ohio State lands No. 2 seed for women’s tournament, hosting first two rounds

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Ohio State women’s basketball team now knows its path to the Final Four in Cleveland and it will begin in Columbus.

The Buckeyes were named a No. 2 seed for the 2024 NCAA Tournament bracket, giving them hosting duties for three games at the Schottenstein Center. Ohio State will host No. 15 Maine in the first round on Friday, March 22 at noon with the game set to be broadcast on ESPN. The winner of that game will face the winner of the other first-round game in Columbus, which is between No. 7 Duke and No. 10 Richmond. The second round game would take place on Sunday at a time to be determined.

Ohio State men’s basketball miss NCAA tournament for second straight year

Ohio State was placed in Portland Regional 3 and faces a tough road to its first Final Four since 1993. Alongside the Buckeyes, the top teams in the region include No. 1 USC, No. 3 UConn, and No. 4 Virginia Tech. This marks the first time since 2010 that the Buckeyes are a No. 2 seed.

Fresh off its third straight 25-win season and a Big Ten regular season championship, the Buckeyes believe they can take the next step and go to northeast Ohio for the Final Four. Ohio State has made the regional semifinals the past two tournaments which included a loss to Virginia Tech in last year’s regional final.

The Buckeyes went on a 15-game winning streak to start 2024 before losing its last two games — a road loss to Iowa to end the regular season and a shock loss to Maryland in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals.

Should Ohio State win two NCAA tournament games at home and make the Sweet 16, it would mark the first time since 1989 that the Buckeyes reached that round in three consecutive tournaments. The NCAA women’s basketball tournament begins on Wednesday with the First Four round and concludes with the championship game in Cleveland on April 7.

Tickets for the first and second rounds at the Schottenstein Center will go on sale Monday at 11 a.m. Click here for details.
