COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Representatives from the Ohio Expo Center were joined by Gov. Mike DeWine on Monday to break ground on projects as part of the Expo 2050 plan.

Ground was broken on two buildings to “revitalize the fairgrounds in Columbus, the Ohio Showcase Building and the new agriculture building,” wrote the Governor’s office in a statement. The long-term Expo 2050 plan aims to enhance the 360-acre Ohio state fairgrounds in Columbus for future development.

“There is so much to enjoy at the Ohio State Fair, and the enhancements to these spectacular fairgrounds will make the experience even better,” said Governor DeWine.  “These projects will preserve the historic beauty and character of the fairgrounds, while also adding modern improvements that showcase everything great about our state.”

The fairgrounds have hosted the Ohio State Fair since 1886 and Monday’s ground breaking included starting to enhance the Ohio Showcase Building. Once finished in 2026, the showcase building will have a food hall with six vendors and exhibit space.

The new agricultural building will also house exhibits and have meals served by commodity groups. The exhibit hall will have more than 100,000 square feet of space. Additionally, the Expo 2050 project includes a new, large entry gate to welcome visitors from the main north parking lots between the fairgrounds and Historic Crew Stadium.

The 2024 Ohio State Fair will take place from July 24 to Aug. 4.
