Back in 2019, Canva, the wildly successful design tool, introduced what the company was calling an enterprise product, but in reality it was more geared toward teams than fulfilling true enterprise requirements. On Thursday, the company changed that, announcing a new enterprise version that is truly geared toward the needs of larger organizations. Cam Adams, co-founder and CPO at the company, says in 2019, they were looking at moving from supporting mostly individual users to supporting small teams from between five and 100 users.
Redwood Materials, the battery recycling startup founded by former Tesla co-founder JB Straubel, will be recycling production scrap for batteries going into General Motors electric vehicles. The company announced Thursday that it’s working with Ultium Cells, the joint battery manufacturing venture between GM and LG Energy Solution, to recycle cathode, anode and cell scrap from both their Warren, Ohio and Spring Hill, Tennessee facilities. Battery recycling is a hot industry as automakers and battery manufacturers seek to control their battery material supply, rather than rely on China, the global leader in the space.

The two-year-old startup is helping shoppers buy with more confidence, said Theo Satloff, co-founder and CEO of Remark. It does this by pairing shoppers with high-quality product experts via an asynchronous live chat with one of 50,000 human experts — artists, musicians, stylists, golfers, ski instructors — who can discuss items just like a retail staffer would do. Remark also gives the human experts a cut of each sale made through the platform.
AI is only the latest and hungriest market for high-performance computing, and system architects are working around the clock to wring every drop of performance out of every watt. Swedish startup ZeroPoint, armed with €5 million ($5.5 million USD) in new funding, wants to help them out with a novel memory compression technique at the nanosecond scale — and yes, it's exactly as complicated as it sounds. The concept is this: losslessly compress data just before it enters RAM, and decompress it afterwards, effectively widening the memory channel by 50% or more just by adding one small piece to the chip.
OpenAI cast the actor of Sky's voice months before Sam Altman contacted Scarlett Johansson, and it had no intention of finding someone who sounded like her, according to The Washington Post.

HoundDog.ai, a startup that helps developers ensure their code doesn't leak personally identifiable information (PII), came out of stealth Wednesday and announced a $3.1 million seed round lead by E14, Mozilla Ventures and ex/ante, in addition to a number of angel investors. Unlike other scanning tools, HoundDog actually looks at the code a developer is writing, using both traditional pattern matching and large language models (LLMs) to find potential issues. HoundDog was founded by Amjad Afanah, who previously co-founded DCHQ, which was later acquired by Gridstore (which, to complicate things, then changed its name to HyperGrid) in 2016.

Co-founder Chris Pedregal says he was inspired to build Granola after working with GPT-3 when it was new. The company sold to Google, and Pedregal stayed at the tech giant for a couple of years before getting the itch to build again.

Where Aytac Yilmaz lives in the Netherlands, the sun might not appear for days on end, which can really crimp the output of the country’s solar panels. Wind turbines might make up some of the shortfall, but what if the wind disappears at the same time? Enter long-duration energy storage, or massive batteries tailored to serve the electrical grid.
Autodesk — the 3D tools behemoth — has acquired Wonder Dynamics, a startup that lets creators quickly and easily make complex characters and visual effects using AI-powered image analysis. Wonder Dynamics, founded by VFX artist Nikola Todorovic and actor Tye Sheridan, basically made adding motion-captured CG characters to footage as simple as dragging an icon onto an actor. With years of experience in the film industry, the co-founders were clear from the start that it was a tool for professionals, providing all the nitty-gritty mocap, animation, and masking that VFX folks need to do their job.
