UHRICHSVILLE ‒ The Uhrichsville office of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, operated by the Twin City Chamber of Commerce, will remain open for at least one more year.

The chamber, along with Uhrichsville Mayor Jim Zucal and Dennison Mayor Greg DiDonato, announced the office will stay open until June 30, 2025. At that time, the state will reevaluate usage of the office.

The office, 206 E. Third St., had been scheduled to close April 27.

Lindsey Bohrer, assistant communications director at the Ohio Department of Public Safety, said the chamber had told the BMV that declining revenue and other factors hampered the chamber's ability to continue to operate the agency. So, the BMV decided to close the office.

In a press release from the chamber of commerce, the agency thanked state Sen. Al Landis, R-Dover, and state Rep. Brett Hillyer, R-Uhrichsville, for their efforts in helping to save the office.

Petitions sent to the state

"Over 1,800 signatures in both online and in-person petitions that were obtained were sent to the state," the chamber said in a press release. "Many rural areas and surrounding small communities have limited access to internet, and an aged population whose ability to travel very far is limited were some of the reasons cited to keep the keep the facility open.

"The original decision to close the Uhrichsville bureau was due to the decrease in transactions with only 33,000 taking place in 2023. It is felt that the number could continue to decline due to the lengthier license times and mail-in/online options. While those opportunities are easier and more convenient, if the Uhrichsville BMV continues to decline in transactions, they will be forced the close the facility with no chance to reverse the decision. So, citizens should use the Uhrichsville BMV or lose it."

The Twin City Chamber of Commerce has operated the license bureau since 1992. A previous license bureau in Uhrichsville was closed in 1989 as part of a state cutback, but it was brought back after lobbying by area leaders, including DiDonato, who was then a state representative.
