Oh, whale! Humpback whale skull found on Cape Hatteras

CAPES HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) — Oh whale that’s not something you see every day! Cape Hatteras National Seashore announced in a Facebook post on Wednesday that they found part of a whale skull.

The Humpback whale skull was found on Hatteras Island.

“Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) have specialized skull structures to support their unique feeding behaviors,” the Facebook post reads. “Their skulls are relatively flexible, especially around the jaw joints, which enables them to open their mouths wide to consume large volumes of water and prey.”

The post goes on to attribute the stranding to possibly being related to the island’s proximity to the Outer Banks.
