Google Fiber on Wednesday began construction of its first ultra-high-speed internet service in Round Rock on Ferndale Drive, east of Interstate 35.

As construction expands, neighborhoods in the east side of the city will be among the first to have access to the service, said John-Michael Cortez, the government and community affairs manager for Google Fiber.

He said service should be available in the area by the end of the year. Cortez has said bringing the optic network to Round Rock is the start of the company's goal to bring Google Fiber throughout Williamson County.

Google Fiber offers one or two gigabyte service to customers without data caps, equipment fees or annual contracts. Prices for one gigabyte start as low as $70 a month, company officials said.

The City Council in October 2022 approved an agreement to allow the company to install, maintain and operate a fiber optic network in the public right of way in Round Rock. The agreement includes a license fee that requires Google to pay 1% of gross revenue on a quarterly basis for the ability to run the network in the city's right of way, Round Rock officials said.

To see availability updates, residents can visit fiber.google.com and enter their address. To learn more about the agreement with Round Rock and to view an FAQ, visit roundrocktexas.gov/googlefiber.
