Ever since Central Florida beat Auburn in the Peach Bowl last season to post a perfect 13-0 record — the only NCAA Division I FBS team to do so — the Golden Knights have launched a massive campaign to declare themselves college football’s national champions.

UCF started claiming the national title shortly after the bowl game, holding a championship parade, unveiling championship rings and a banner at Spectrum Stadium, and even offered championship bonuses for its coaching staff. UCF police even created a special championship police car.

Yet after months of kickback from college football fans across the country — and even from Nick Saban, who led Alabama past Georgia in the actual national championship game — it’s finally official.

The NCAA has officially recognized the Golden Knights’ claim to the championship, adding them to the updated version of the NCAA Football Records Book.

While it may not have the support of every college football fan out there — and Alabama will always be recognized as the National Champions after beating Georgia in the College Football Playoff — there’s no denying it any longer.

UCF is (also) the 2017 College Football National Champion.
