Officer released from hospital after being shot Friday, Baltimore Police say

A Baltimore Police officer who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest during a fatal exchange of gunfire with a man Friday has been released from the hospital, according to the department.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. Friday, when officers were investigating reports of a shooting from days prior that hadn’t resulted in injuries in the 3400 block of South Hanover Street in the Fairfield Area in South Baltimore, according to police.

Officers approached a man sitting on the porch of a commercial building and began questioning him, according to a news release from the state attorney general’s office.

As officers continued speaking with the man, he withdrew a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at them, according to police.

The man did not comply with commands from officers to drop the firearm, according to the attorney general’s office. Multiple officers then exchanged gunfire with the man, the release says.

The man was shot multiple times, and one officer was struck in the chest, hitting his bulletproof vest, according to police.

The injured officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition Friday night. Police said Sunday that the officer has since been released from the hospital, but BPD did not provide further details on the recovery.

The shooting is under review by city police and the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.
