Deputy-involved shooting investigated near Aurora middle school

DENVER (KDVR) — An Aurora middle school was placed on secure status Wednesday while investigators responded to a deputy-involved shooting at a home nearby.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to FOX31 that the incident involved county deputies, but few specifics were available about what happened.

“I’m not at liberty to say what transpired, only they fired shots,” sheriff’s office spokesperson Ginger Delgado told FOX31’s Greg Nieto.

The sheriff’s office confirmed its response around 3:45 p.m. and later described the incident: “One victim has been transported to a local hospital. No suspect information is available at this time, however, there is no threat to the community.”

The shooting happened in the 4500 block of South Himalaya Circle at a “host home,” according to Delgado, which is a home where someone gets in-residence care.

“The caller reported that someone in the home had a gun,” Delgado said.

Delgado told FOX31 that the person who was hurt lives at the home, but she was unable to confirm that person’s relationship with the person who called law enforcement.

Delgado stressed that there was “absolutely no threat to the community.”

Dismissal for Sky Vista Middle School was delayed by about 20 minutes because of the activity, according to Cherry Creek Schools. A Cherry Creek Schools spokesperson told FOX31 just after 4 p.m. that the secure status had been lifted.

The 18th Judicial District Critical Response Team was on the scene “and handling the investigation,” according to the sheriff’s office.
