Officer-involved deadly shooting at Appleton’s Maritime Bar deemed justified

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – After a review by the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office of the deadly officer-involved shooting at Appleton’s Maritime Bar back in January, it was determined that the officer’s actions were justified.

According to a release from the Appleton Police Department, the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office has completed its review of the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation’s report on the incident that took place at the Maritime Bar in Appleton on January 23.

The review included written reports from the investigators, body camera video from the officers, surveillance videos, officer and witness statements, and photographs from the scene, ultimately leading to a conclusion of a justified use of force.

Appleton Police Officers responded to an active disturbance involving the discharge of a firearm within the Maritime Bar. Officer Thor, without hesitation and by himself, entered the establishment to address an active threat. After entering the business, he was fired upon, sustaining injuries. Despite this, Officer Thor took the necessary steps to stop an imminent threat. Officer Thor’s quick action undoubtedly saved the lives of patrons and additional responding officers. His actions were nothing less than heroic. Our community should be proud of the officers who are committed to keeping Appleton safe.

It was noted that the officer involved will be returned to duty effective immediately.

Man named ‘Deez-Nuts’ arrested in Green Bay, charged with battery

The incident reportedly happened around 1:30 a.m. on January 23 when the Appleton Police Department got a report of shots fired inside the Maritime Bar.

When authorities got to the scene, they were allegedly confronted by an armed subject who shot at law enforcement. A police officer then fired at the subject, hitting them. They were later pronounced dead at the hospital.

No additional information regarding the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office’s review was provided.
