Officer injured trying to stop fight in downtown Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kan. — An officer with the Lawrence Police Department received minor injuries while trying to stop a fight between two men.

Officers were called to the area of W. 8th Street and Vermont Street in downtown Lawrence just after 5:30 p.m. Monday for a report of a fight in progress.

When officers arrived, they attempted to intervene, but the two men, a 28-year-old and a 25-year-old, refused to back down.

Police said while an officer tried to take the 28-year-old man into custody, the suspect allegedly kicked the officer in the groin. Another officer then tased the suspect and he was arrested.

The 25-year-old man continued to try to initiate a fight with the arrested suspect and was also taken into custody, according to police.

Police said the injured officer, despite intense pain and lacerations to his arms and hand, was able to return to duty.
