Obituary: Charles M. Baker, 80, Of Uncasville

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 31 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Catherine of Siena in Preston.

The following obituary of Uncasville resident Charles M. Baker, 80, is from Montville Funeral Home of Church & Allen:

Charles M. Baker, 80, of Uncasville, CT died peacefully at home on August 22, 2018. Charles was born in Old Town, ME on March 29, 1938. He was the tenth of sixteen children born to John and Isabelle (Taylor) Baker.

Chuck worked for United Nuclear in Uncasville, CT as a machinist supervisor until a car accident left him disabled and unable to continue his career. Many hobbies kept Chuck occupied over the years. He had a great mind for building and over the span of 30 years, built three unique homes for his beloved family.

Chuck also had a knack for fishing and spent many evenings on Amos Lake in Preston trolling for trout. He was also a parishioner of Saint Catherine of Siena in Preston. Music soothed his soul and his beautiful voice and guitar playing was enjoyed by family and friends.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Susan D. Baker; his daughters, Christina Baker of Jewett City, CT; and Carolyn Rowbotham and her husband David of Waterford, CT; three grandsons: Travis Baker of Jewett City, CT; and Connor and Cayden Rowbotham of Waterford, CT. Charles is survived by six sisters and three brothers: Theresa Algard of Watertown, SD; Mary Blair of Veazie, ME; Ruth Grindle of Westbrook, ME; Rose Bishop and her husband Richard, of Ashaway, RI; Leona Gagnier of Port Orange, FL; Joan Knuti of Rock Hill, SC; Richard Baker and his wife Myrtle, of Old Town, ME; Joseph Baker and his wife Mary (Mimi) of Lee, ME; David Baker and his wife Gloria of Milford, ME.

He is also survived by one sister-in-law Judy Milholland and her husband John of Tijeras, NM and two brother-in-laws David Rogers and his wife Maryanne of Branford, CT and John Jalonski of Waterford, CT; and many, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Two lifetime friends, brothers Jerry and Roger Vowels also survive him. Charles was predeceased by his parents, John and Isabelle Baker; his two brothers: John (Buster) Baker and Patrick Baker; four sisters: Helen Varney, Rita Jalonski, Lilian Kafka and Marion Carrier; seven brothers-in-law: Gerald Blair, Robert Varney, John Knuti, Lawrence Grindle, Ernie Kafka, James Algard, Carl Gagnier and Victor Carrier. He was also predeceased by his mother and father-in-law John and Josephine Rogers. Longtime neighbor and good friend, Svend Lerche of Preston, CT also predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 31 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Catherine of Siena in Preston. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
