OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — Oakland city leaders said they are stepping up efforts to confront crime along the Hegenberger corridor. The corridor between Oakland International Airport and International Boulevard has seen its share of problems in recent years.

On Monday, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao along with the Oakland Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and community leaders gathered to reassure the public that they are working on addressing problems along the corridor.

“This is a key gateway to Oakland and a key element to Oakland’s economic engine,” said Mayor Thao.

The city said that auto burglaries, robberies and larceny along Helgenberger have all decreased over the last year. Still, they admit that there’s a lot of work to do to restore public confidence.

The city said it is increasing the number of Oakland PD officers along Hegenberger seven days a week. It is also adding foot patrols and trust-building officers, installing security cameras, and spending $2 million to add safety ambassadors and private security at gas stations and other businesses along Hegenberger.

“The collaborative efforts between the City of Oakland, Port of Oakland, and our public safety partners in the California Highway Patrol and Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is delivering results and is an example of good government at work,” Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said in a statement. “The Hegenberger Merchant Corridor Safety Ambassador Program strengthens community connections, improves coordination with city services, and directly enhances our collective efforts to promote a safer and more welcoming experience along this key gateway to our city.”

The CHP, which has occasionally deployed officers in Oakland to assist OPD, said it will continue to be available as needed.

“The CHP will continue to conduct unannounced surge operations in high crime area. in cooperation with our partners across the East Bay region,” said a CHP representative Monday.

“We have a lot of work to do. We have to do more. This is just the beginning,” said Mayor Thao.
