An O’Fallon Mexican restaurant closes its doors after 26 years. Here’s what we know

Another longtime Mexican restaurant is closing, this time in O’Fallon.

Chevys Fresh Mex, located at 1305 Central Park Drive, will close Thursday, March 7.

A phone call to the restaurant confirmed that Thursday is the eatery’s last day of business, but a reason for the closure was not given.

The following statement was provided by Cinch PR in response to an inquiry sent to Xperience Restaurant Group, Chevys’ parent company:

“After 26 years in the St. Louis community, Chevys has closed its O’Fallon location, effective March 7, 2024. Unfortunately, we were unable to reach a lease agreement, leading to this difficult decision,” stated Mike Johnson, Chief Operating Officer at Xperience Restaurant Group.

“We are thankful for our loyal diners and, especially to our committed team members, who have tirelessly contributed to serving our O’Fallon community with the fresh cuisine for which we are known. Chevys’ Olivette location will continue to operate as usual, as will our other locations throughout the United States.”

Community Development Director Justin Randall said the city is “obviously disappointed that [Chevys is] leaving O’Fallon.”

“It’s unfortunate they aren’t sticking around,” but hopefully someone new can soon be found to fill that spot, he said.

Chevys Fresh Mex opened on Nov. 16, 1998, according to a column from the BND archives.

This closing comes just over four years after an O’Charley’s restaurant closed next door in December 2019. O’Charley’s opened in June 2000.

Randall did say that the former O’Charley’s site is currently under redevelopment by Glen Carbon-based Zaza Nails & Spa.

I’ll provide an update on that development when I have more information.
