NYPD cops fatally shoot emotionally disturbed man holding 2 knives on Brooklyn street

Brooklyn NYPD cops fatally shot an emotionally disturbed man who approached their car holding two knives early Sunday, officials said.

The two officers were finishing up responding to a domestic violence call when the 26-year-old man tapped on the window of their vehicle on Eldert St. near Central Ave. in Bushwick just before 2:30 a.m., NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell told reporters.

The officers stepped outside, saw the man was holding a knife in each hand and tried to “quickly verbally de-escalate” before firing their Tasers at the man, Chell said.

The man dropped one of the knives as he fell to the ground but held on to the second blade as he got back up and charged the two cops, Chell said.

The two officers then opened fire, mortally wounding the man. Medics took him to an area hospital, where he died, said Chell.

He called the incident a “very tough night for these two officers and for the family of the EDP — and the EDP,” using police jargon for an “emotionally disturbed person.”

Cops have not yet released the man’s name and did not identify the two cops. Chell didn’t say if the man was involved in the prior domestic violence call.

Neighbors said they heard several shots in quick succession.

“It was quiet before and after,” said Annaka Olsen, 34. “I was up in bed, and I heard five rapid shots. I didn’t hear anything leading up to the shots.”

As of May 19, police had responded to just one shooting in the 83rd Precinct this year.

“This neighborhood is good, so this is kind of shocking,” said one neighbor, who didn’t give his name. “This is just strange because there’s a school here and we all know each other. …That was rapid shots, bop, bop, bop, bop, bop. That sounded way too close. This is just rare.”

The shooting comes just two weeks after NYPD cops shot an armed man to death during a confrontation on another Brooklyn street. Christian Emile, 33, pointed a gun at a rival early May 12 and two officers, and a sergeant from the 67th Precinct used a Taser on him, then shot him when he didn’t drop his weapon, police said.

On April 30, an NYPD detective and lieutenant with a joint federal Homeland Security violent gang task force shot a man who pulled a gun inside a Chelsea eyeglasses store.

And on March 27, police responding to a 911 call for help made by Win Rozario, a 19-year-old man suffering from mental health problems, shot him dead inside his Queens apartment.

Bodycam footage released five weeks after the shooting shows Rozario grabbing a pair of scissors in his kitchen. The officers Tased him, and his mother managed to get the scissors away from him and drop them onto a nearby chair.

After his mother stepped away, the cops Tased him a second time. He picked up the scissors again and ran at the officers as his brother and mother pushed him back into kitchen. The officers then shot him multiple times.

Rozario’s family is calling for the officers to be fired and prosecuted.
