NYC Transit President named as finalist for top Massachusetts job

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – The head of New York City’s subways and buses is one of the finalists for a new job in Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Port Authority on Thursday announced the two finalists today for their CEO position, one of which is Richard Davey, who has been with the MTA since May 2022. He is from Massachusetts and has had top transportation jobs in that state.

The other candidate is the director of public works in Miami.

In a statement, Davey said he appreciates the recommendation from that board and called it an amazing opportunity in his hometown.

“However, serving as President of New York City Transit – working every day for our six million customers and 47,000 transit employees with critical and consistent support from Governor Hochul and MTA Chair Lieber – is a privilege and one of the best jobs in the transit world. I will continue to push forward to deliver faster, cleaner, and safer service for subway and bus customers every day I serve in this role,” he wrote in a statement.

That board is planning another round of interviews next week and then they will vote in an open meeting to make the hire.

The Riders Alliance advocates for transit service in New York.

“Whoever helms New York’s subway and bus systems, it’s our governor who’s responsible for the quality and reliability of the public transit service that millions of New Yorkers ride each day. Right now, riders are looking to Governor Hochul to make sure the MTA is fully staffed and that congestion pricing rolls out, delivering accessible stations and upgrading ancient signals on the notoriously delayed A and C train lines in Brooklyn,’ said Danny Pearlstein with the Alliance.
