NYC delivery workers face more injury and assault, study reveals

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — A recent study reveals delivery workers in the city face high rates of injury and assault.

CUNY researchers released the study on Monday, which details that one in five workers reported being injured, and a similar number were assaulted.

The study attributes the risks delivery workers navigate to app algorithms that incentivize speed and sometimes give delivery drivers unsafe routes to follow.

Researchers say there’s a need for stronger labor protections and accountability for app-based companies.

One delivery company, DoorDash, says they are committed to listening to Dashers on the ways that we can best support them and help them dash with confidence in New York City.

“This so-called ‘research’ re-packages a deeply flawed survey conducted by the City, which the study itself concedes was not representative of the New Yorkers who are doing this work,” a statement from a DoorDash spokesperson read. “Here’s what we know to be true: Safety is and will continue to be a top priority for DoorDash. We were the first in the industry to offer occupational accident insurance to Dashers at no cost to them and have continued to roll out new safety measures to give them even greater peace of mind before, during, and after the dash.
