NYC announces winner of micro-unit housing

NYC announces competition winner of micro-unit housing for one- and two-person households

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City has a designer for its first micro-unit apartment building.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday a development team won the design competition for the pilot program.

It'll design and construct a 55-micro-unit building, "My Micro NY," on city-owned property on West 27th Street in Manhattan. The units will be between 250 and 370 square feet — about the size of a one-car garage.

Forty-to-50 percent will be reserved for low- and middle-income New Yorkers.

The announcement was made at the Museum of the City of New York. An exhibition opening at the museum Wednesday features a 325-square-foot model of a fully-furnished studio. It also features the designs of the city's winner and four finalists.

The team consists of Monadnock Development LLC, Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation and nARCHITECTS.
