NY, SUNY union agree on a mostly flat labor deal
SUNY union gets 2 percent raises, agrees to give-backs in labor deal with state
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Unionized workers at the State University of New York have agreed to a mostly flat new contract with the state.
The United University Professions union has agreed to 2 percent raises in 2014 and in 2015, while taking nine unpaid days to cut costs at SUNY. The union says salary for seven of those days will be repaid at the end of the contract.
Workers will also pay more for health insurance.
The union members won't get a raise for 2011 through the current year under Tuesday's deal.
Payments of $250 to $500 will be made to certain employees at the discretion of the chancellor, Nancy Zimpher.
UUP President Frederick Kowal says the contract preserves many of the members' health benefits.
He says the union expected givebacks because of continuing hard fiscal times.
