NY opens 2 parking areas for upper Hudson paddlers
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York conservation officials have established two new parking areas on recently purchased public land in the central Adirondacks, effectively opening more than a dozen miles of the upper Hudson River to canoeists.
Both are on the west side of the Hudson, less than a mile from the water.
The first is about 7 miles south of the hamlet of Newcomb, below the confluence of the Goodnow River. The second is about seven miles farther downstream, above the confluence of the Indian River.
The Hudson consists of moderate rapids and long flat-water stretches through the former timber company land, which was posted for decades against trespassing.
Below the Indian River, the Hudson has bigger rapids normally traveled in rafts.
The interim access plan takes effect Friday afternoon.
