NWI college commencements start Saturday

Northwest Indiana’s colleges and universities will be holding commencement exercises over the next two weeks.

Purdue University Northwest kicks it off with a noon outdoor ceremony on Saturday at its Hammond campus. The rain date is Sunday. There are 834 candidates for degrees.

Indiana University Northwest’s ceremony is at 10 a.m. May 8 in the Savannah Center parking lot, 65 W. 33rd Ave., in Gary. There are 626 graduates.

Ivy Tech’s Valparaiso and Michigan City graduates will receive degrees in a 6 p.m. ceremony May 9 at Valparaiso University’s Athletic Recreation Center, 1009 Union St.

Ivy Tech’s Lake County campuses mark commencement at 4:30 p.m. May 10 at the U.S. SteelYard baseball stadium, 1 Stadium Plaza, Gary. Kevin Teasley, founder and CEO of the Indianapolis-based Greater Education Opportunities Foundation, is this year’s honorary degree recipient and keynote speaker.

Calumet College of St. Joseph is hosting commencement at noon May 11 at its Rittenmeyer Athletic Center, 2400 New York Ave., Whiting. The keynote speaker is former U.S. senator and current U.S. ambassador to the Vatican Joe Donnelly.

Valparaiso University’s two commencement ceremonies are on May 11 at the Athletic Recreation Center.

At 9 a.m., College of Business and College of Arts and Sciences will hold a ceremony followed by a 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. reception for the Class of 2024 at the Harre Union Ballroom.

At 2 p.m., College of Engineering and College of Nursing and Health Professions graduates will receive degrees.
