‘Numerous’ officers struck by gunfire in shootout with barricaded person, Charlotte police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTW) — Several police officers were struck by gunfire from a barricaded person on Monday afternoon as a federal task force was conducting an investigation near Shannon Park in Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a SWAT team was deployed to the 5000 block of Galway Drive which is located on the city’s eastern side.

The incident started around 2 p.m.

Police said on their X account that major traffic delays are expected as roads are being shut down to “expedite victim transport.” Gunfire was continuing on the scene as of 2:08 p.m.

“Numerous law enforcement officers struck by gunfire in active situation in the 5000 block of Galway Drive. The scene is still active. Avoid the area. Many roads are closed for faster ambulance transport. Please cooperate with authorities,” police said at 2:16 p.m.

WJZY reported Monday that details are limited as to what a U.S. Marshals’ Task Force was investigating before gunfire broke out.

The Charlotte Area Transit System, or CATS, said emergency vehicles are blocking tracks from Elizabeth and Hawthorn to Sunnyside Station. Long delays are expected.
