Number of syphilis cases in Colorado spikes

Grand Junction, Colo. (KREX) — In 2023, there were 3,266 cases of syphilis in Colorado. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has noted an increase in syphilis cases, declaring an epidemic.

However, with screenings being more common now, it’s easier for doctors to catch the latent cases and new cases before they cause permanent damage. Increased screenings may also cause case numbers to spike as more people get tested.

It’s important to get screened and treated as quickly as possible, as the latent stage doesn’t have symptoms but can still spread and cause serious health issues.

Local public health departments offer free screenings, and the CDPHE also offers at-home screening kits that are available here.
