NTSB probes engine problem on Atlanta-Miami flight
ATLANTA (AP) — Federal transportation officials are investigating what caused an engine problem on a Delta Air Lines jet shortly after it took off from Atlanta this week.
The National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report that the Boeing MD-88 had a loss of power in its left engine shortly after take-off from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Tuesday.
Authorities said the pilots shut down the engine and the airplane returned to Atlanta instead of continuing on to its scheduled destination of Miami.
The NTSB report states that an examination of the jet revealed that a portion of the lower engine cowl was missing, and there was a hole in the fan duct.
