NRC holding meeting to discuss annual safety assessment of Duke nuclear plant in SC

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Federal nuclear regulators are visiting Hartsville, S.C. to discuss safety at a Duke Energy Corp. nuclear power plant.

Officials from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission are set to hold a public meeting on Wednesday to talk about their annual assessment of safety at the H.B. Robinson Nuclear Plant.

Overall, NRC officials say the agency concluded that the Robinson plant operated safely last year.

The NRC stepped up scrutiny at Robinson after incidents in 2010 that included two fires, a faulty breaker on an emergency generator and inadequate training for workers. The next year, a false alarm sounded in a reactor containment building while the unit was being brought back on line after a faulty relay shut it down three days earlier.
