Nous sommes tous Français: United States stands in solidarity with France

Solidarité.

People across the globe are coming together to show their support and love for France and its people after terrorists murdered at least 128 people and critically injured many more.

The United States swiftly condemned the coordinated attack in the heart of Paris, for which the Islamic State group claimed responsibility.

President Barack Obama called the attack an "outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians" and swore to assist the French people and their government in any way.

“Paris itself represents the timeless values of human progress,” he said Friday evening. “Those who think that they can terrorize the people of France or the values that they stand for are wrong. The American people draw strength from the French people’s commitment to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness.”

Vice President Joe Biden joined Obama in offering condolences to the families who lost loved ones and the wounded. As the investigation continues, he said, the United States and France will stand together as they have before in the face of dangers and threats.

“We will never bow. We will never break. That’s the character of our two nations,” Biden said. “We are bound by timeless democratic values that the cowardice and perverse ideologues of extremist networks can never match, wherever they are. Such savagery can never threaten who we are. We will respond. We will overcome. We will endure.”

France was the United States’ first ally due to its support for the American Revolution. The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of the U.S. and its values around the world, was a gift from France.

In the wake of the attacks, French artist Jean Jullien painted a picture of a peace sign that prominently features the Eiffel Tower. The image quickly went viral and has been used throughout the world to show solidarity with France.
