‘There’s nothing we can do’: Convicted child predator to be released in Madera County

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) — “There’s nothing we can do. We don’t have a right to appeal. We don’t have a right to change anything,” Madera County District Attorney Sally Moreno said.

She said Ciro Camacho, a convicted child sexual predator, is about to get released into Madera County.

She says Judge Stephanie Jamieson, a Merced County Superior Court Judge, approved of the release, despite the Merced County DA and three doctors at the California state hospital voicing their opposition.

“This judge has decided unilaterally in the face that a ton of evidence that says this guy is still a danger to children, both of his priors are for child molest offenses, and she’s decided to release him. You know interestingly she’s not releasing him to her county- Merced- she’s releasing him with a clear understanding that he’s coming to our county,” Morena said.

Camacho was convicted of lewd acts with a child under the age of 14 back in 1993.

Moreno said he’s being released to Madera County because it’s where his family lives, and while he has to wear an ankle monitor and check in with a parole officer, other than that he’s free.

“If they saw him at a park, at a library, at a school, talking to children, having a conversation with children, you know, make the call and get the sheriff out there,” she said.  “They can’t monitor him 24 seven. But if they get calls that he’s at a local park, they’ll be there in a heartbeat.”

Despite the backlash about this release in Madera County just months ago this year,  it was residents and law enforcement officials in Merced County protesting the same thing.

In February, the DA and sheriff in Merced County learned that Kevin Gray, a convicted child sex offender from Stanislaus County, was going to be released to Merced County. However, after objections from the community it was called off.
