Not even a blizzard could stop Placer County’s election

(FOX40.COM) — In the days leading up to the primary election eastern Placer County was buried in several feet of snow nearly halting ballot gathering operations, but with the help of many partners the votes made it through.

In a video from the county on Tuesday night, Placer County Registrar of Voters Ryan Ronco provided insight into the effort put into make sure the election went forward without issue.

“We had a lot of weather events, we had a lot of necessary functions we needed for all sections of Placer County Government to come together and help us,” Ronco said.

Caltrans, Placer County road crews, county probation and the Placer County Sheriff’s Office assisted the elections office in whatever way they could.

“We could not have done this election without all of those partners,” Ronco said in the video.

When the storm was at its worst and Interstate 80 along Donner Summit was almost impossible to pass deputies guided election workers over the summit.

“When it was too hairy then the sheriff’s office secured are ballots in their jail, in an actual cell and with cameras watching it overnight to ensure those ballots were not tampered with in any way before they came to us,” Ronco said in the video.

Placer County stretches from Roseville and east along Interstate 80 to Tahoe City along the shores of Lake Tahoe.

In order to cover such a large area to provide all residents easy access to polling places the county relies on 600 volunteers.
