MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – Hundreds of Northwood High School students walked out Wednesday afternoon to protest construction delays at Woodward High School.

Many Northwood students will be temporarily attending the newly constructed Woodward High School for the next three years while the new Northwood High School is being built.

Students say the recent construction delays at Woodward High School that were approved by the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Board of Education will leave them without an auditorium for the next three years, and access to outdoor playing fields for the next two years.

Northwood students say these delays will have a major impact on their high school experience.

“We are fighting so that our auditorium will be built as scheduled and as promised,” Northwood High School student, Khadijah Ndiaye, said. “That is what we deserve. We deserve what we were promised, and that is what we are fighting for today.”

Northwood High School student-athlete, Alanna Hart, said not having playing fields will be difficult.

“It’s going to make it really difficult for athletes to be able to do sports and still be a student,” Hart said.

Northwood High School students will have another protest Thursday, April 25, starting at 2:45 p.m., at the MCPS Board of Education building in Rockville.

“These students do not deserve to be pushed aside,” Northwood High School student, Mariama Thiam, said. “They have real concerns and real responsibilities, and they have real hopes and real dreams.”
