Northwest Visalia to receive ‘rejuvenating’ asphalt treatment

VISALIA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Areas in northwest Visalia will receive a “rejuvenating” treatment to its streets beginning on May 28 throughout the summer, city officials announced.

The rejuvenating treatment will be made by applying reclamite, which according to officials, is a pavement maintenance treatment technique that involves the application of an asphaltic emulsion to restore and preserve durability in asphalt, extend the life of newly constructed pavement, and provide for corrective maintenance on deteriorated pavements.

After the application of the “rejuvenating emulsion” into the existing pavement surface, officials say a coating of dry sand is applied to the surface to provide additional skid resistance while absorbing the excess oils.

City officials say oils not absorbed into the pavement will be swept by a street sweeper.

“Thanks to Measure N Voters and Landscaping & Lighting Districts, we can perform this necessary street work. The maintenance will improve the durability of the asphalt and delay the aging process, ultimately getting more life out of our roads,” said Danny Galindo, the Public Works Manager.

Talley Oil, Inc., according to Galindo, is the contracted company for the street project and will have crews out from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Streets receiving treatment will not be open to parking. Galindo says some minor traffic delays can also be expected.

Officials say notifications have gone out to those in areas where work will be completed and temporary “No Parking” signs were also posted.

City officials shared some tips to minimize any inconvenience caused to residents by this project:

  • Keep pets and children off the street during application to prevent oil from being tracked into the home. Check shoes and pet’s feet for residue after application to protect floors.

  • If you track oil residue into the driveway or garage it can be washed off with dish soap and water, or it will wear off in two to six weeks.

  • Drive slow (10 mph) to prevent pickup. Residue on vehicles can be removed by immediately washing with dish soap and water.
