FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The United States Postal Service processing and distribution will continue to operate in Northwest Arkansas until at least January 1, 2025, after a letter was sent to U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy from the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.

USPS considers moving processing, delivery services from Fayetteville to Oklahoma City

Mail processing and delivery services across the country were originally considered for consolidation. Processing and distribution services at the Fayetteville center were set to move to Oklahoma City. The decision was then made to modernize Fayetteville’s distribution center as a local processing center. Now, DeJoy has decided to halt all consolidations of the postal service’s processing network until at least January 1, 2025.

DeJoy says he will not advance the Postal Service’s plans without advising the committee “and then only at a moderated pace of implementation.”

In the letter, DeJoy says the nationwide consolidation would help the Postal Service to “more efficiently handle most of the mail that is not turnaround mail, while still ensuring that we provide timely delivery for turnaround mail within established service standards.”

USPS: Fayetteville facility to remain open, no longer serve as distribution facility

Congressman Steve Womack said the pause is a positive development for Arkansans.

“The decision to pause USPS consolidations, including the NW Arkansas Processing and Distribution Center, is a WIN for Arkansans,” Womack said. “I’m glad our efforts at the federal and local levels to convince Postmaster General DeJoy to temporarily halt these changes were successful. This ensures that residents and businesses across the region that depend on USPS can continue to count on reliable mail service. I will continue to fight for the best outcome for those I proudly represent.”
