North Little Rock police arrest suspect in November homicide investigation

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The North Little Rock Police Department has arrested a suspect in a homicide investigation from November of 2023.

NLRPD officials said 39-year-old Jonelle Mathis turned himself into authorities at the North Little Rock District Court on Thursday in connection with the deadly shooting of 43-year-old Jason Smith.

North Little Rock police investigating deadly shooting on West 35th Street

On Nov. 21, 2023, authorities said officers responded to a home in the 1500 block of West 35th Street around 12 a.m. After arriving on the scene, the officers said they found a man, later identified as Smith, in the home with at least one gunshot wound.

Officials with the NLRPD said he was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Investigators eventually identified Mathis as a suspect and secured a warrant for his arrest on Wednesday.

According to a release from the NLRPD, Mathis was seen by a judge and booked into the Pulaski County Detention Facility. He is facing a charge of first-degree murder and a charge of terroristic act.
