North Las Vegas buys back 135-acre site of planned $5 billion medical campus

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A planned $5 billion medical campus in North Las Vegas is coming back under the direction of city government two years after the project was announced.

At a March 6 meeting, city council members voted to buy back 135 acres of land at Pecos Road and the Northern 215 Beltway for $52.5 million. Additional relocation costs pushed the full price over $52.9 million, according to City Manager Ryann Juden.

The previous owner, Legacy AK LLC, bought the land — a prime location just west of the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center — sold the land back to the city for less than market value, Juden said.

Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown said the transaction gives North Las Vegas “the opportunity to control what goes on out there.” Legacy’s reason for selling the land back was not disclosed.

“As the third-largest city in the state and only one hospital in our downtown corridor, I think we owe it to our residents and those veterans that frequent the VA hospital to know about our goal of achieving this healthy living lifestyle and make sure that our residents have access to quality health care that they deserve,” Goynes-Brown said.

She said UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield spoke about a partnership between UNLV and the city during his State of the University address. UNLV’s 6,000-acre northern campus is just north of the VA hospital, across the beltway.

Former Mayor John Lee announced the Helios project during his 2022 State of the City address. Goynes-Brown will head this year’s event on Thursday.
