South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jung Un are in the midst of a three-day summit between the bordering nations that have been involved in a decades-long military standoff dating back to the end of World War II.

As part of that summit, the two sides announced Wednesday that the nations would submit a joint bid to host the 2032 Summer Olympics.

Olympics bid comes with pronouncement of ‘era of no war’

The announcement comes alongside an effort to begin an “era of no war.”

“Today the North and South decided to remove all threats from the entire Korean Peninsula,” Moon said.

This all must be taken with heaping spoonfuls of salt, of course.

The two sides made public statements about nuclear disarmament with the North pledging to permanently close its Dongchang-ri engine testing and missile launching site.

Kim also pledged to destroy the North’s Yongbyon nuclear site, which is believed to be used to create material for nuclear weapons, if the United States agrees to corresponding measures, CNN reports.

Report: North Korea continues nuclear proliferation

All of this comes amidst reports of a new era of nuclear development in North Korea with current and former U.S. intelligence officials telling the New York Times that Kim is marching on with nuclear capabilities as much as ever.

Instead of doing it out in the open with gaudy displays of missile tests and military parades, Kim is doing it under wraps to appease U.S. President Donald Trump after their brief summit in June in Singapore, intelligence officials told The Times.

Olympics bid part of North Korea propaganda

The Olympics bid announced Wednesday is part of a continued propaganda campaign from North Korea that was on full display when the country sent delegates, athletes and cheerleaders to Pyeongchang for February’s Winter Games in South Korea.

Little is known about North Korea outside of North Korea. What is known is that Kim is a murderous dictator continuing his family’s long-time rule of a country with a reputation for human right abuses that include extermination, enslavement, torture, rape and forced abortions according to the United Nations.

No amount of Olympic goodwill is going to cover up those atrocities or the reported continued nuclear proliferation in North Korea. Nothing that comes from Kim’s regime can be trusted.
