North Greene Students recognized at National French Contest

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — North Greene High School students won various awards at the National French Contest in April.

19 students participated in the competition with public, homeschooled and private school students from across the nation. Nearly 45,000 students competed in the contest.

North Greene French Teacher, Larry Justis, told News Channel 11 that students demonstrate their ability in reading, writing, speaking and listening in two 25-minute sections at the competition.

Student Lisa Kurze earned a perfect score and won first place in the state of Tennessee.

Another student, Tammo Haase, won a silver medal and three students, Lawson Davenport, Zoe Kiser and Keydi Romero, won honorable mentions. The remaining students reached Certificates of Merit.

“It makes me feel very blessed to be here at how they did, I mean, to have five place nationally is just an outstanding achievement for them,” Justis said.

Justis said he hopes the students won’t just minor in French in college, but maybe get a degree in the language.

“I do hope some of them will not just minor in it in college or taking [it] when they get to college to fulfill the degree requirement, but maybe get a degree in it,” Justis said. “I mean, one of these days, somebody is going to have to replace me here as a teacher. But there’s already a shortage of foreign language teachers, especially in our area. So I’d like to see, you know, some of them maybe think about foreign language education.”
