A North Carolina man is accused of stabbing his girlfriend, dousing her and their mobile home with motor fuel and then setting the home on fire.

James Joseph Gunnerson, 48, was arrested for attempted first-degree murder and first-degree arson last week.

Rowan County Sheriff’s deputies were called out to an arson fire at a single-wide mobile home on Chez Charolais Road in Salisbury around 1 a.m. on Friday, May 10.

Investigators believe that Gunnerson and his girlfriend Tamra Marie Clemans got into an argument before he stabbed her. Police say he then doused her and the home with gasoline, and then lit the home on fire.

Clemans was able to escape and seek help from a neighbor.

According to the sheriff’s office, Gunnerson was hiding in the backyard with the knife when fire and sheriff’s personnel arrived at the scene.

“Deputies had to taze him numerous times to take him into custody,” a sheriff’s office press release reads.

Clemans was seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital for treatment. She is in critical condition.

Gunnerson also sustained burns in the fire and was treated for his injuries. He was arrested on May 10 after he was released from the hospital.

He remains in custody with no bond at the Forsyth County Detention Center.
